How to Install or Update EMIS Web
Overview
This article explains how to install EMIS Web on a new machine or update it on an existing one. These steps apply to standard EMIS Web environments used across NHS and healthcare settings.
One of the biggest issues with EMIS Web we see with our clients is update hanging on a Thursday when released by EMIS. In fact this probably accounts for around 60% of our EMIS releated support tickets, as such we’ve developed a keen hand for dealing with these issues.
Before You Begin
- Ensure you have the appropriate permissions to install software on the device.
- Close all running applications, especially any previous EMIS Web instances.
- Confirm that the workstation meets EMIS Web’s minimum system requirements.
- You may need access to the EMIS Health Support Portal or installation media.
Installation Steps
- Download or obtain the installer
- If provided by EMIS directly, download the installer from the EMIS Health portal.
- Alternatively, your IT team may provide a local copy or deployment method.
- Run the EMIS Web installer
- Right-click the installer file and select “Run as administrator.”
- Follow the on-screen instructions to begin the installation.

- Accept the default path unless your organisation requires a specific location (usually:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Egton\EMIS Web).

- The installer will set up the application and necessary components.
- Once finished, click Finish to exit the installer.
- Launch EMIS Web
- Use the EMIS Web shortcut on the desktop or Start Menu.
- If prompted, enter your smartcard credentials or log-in details.
Update Steps
- Check for updates
- EMIS Web typically checks for updates automatically.
- Alternatively, log in and go to Help > About EMIS Web to view the current version.
- Apply updates
- If an update is available, EMIS Web will prompt you to install it.
- Follow the prompts and restart the application when complete.
- Manual updates (if required)
- Occasionally, an update may be provided by your IT department or EMIS Support in the form of a patch or new installer.
- Run the installer as described in the installation steps above.
Troubleshooting
- Permissions Issues: Ensure you’re running the installer with administrative rights.
- Smartcard Errors: Ensure the NHS Identity Agent is installed and up-to-date.
- Missing Dependencies: Some updates require Microsoft .NET or other prerequisites—ensure these are installed.
