This article explains how to reset or change your NHS Smartcard PIN, depending on whether you remember your current PIN or your card is locked.
If You Know Your Current PIN (Change PIN)
If you remember your PIN and just want to change it, you can do this yourself.
Steps:
- Insert your NHS Smartcard into a card reader
- Open Identity Agent or Care Identity Service (CIS)
- Select Change PIN
- Enter your current PIN
- Choose and confirm a new PIN
Your PIN must meet NHS security requirements.
If You Have Forgotten Your PIN or Your Card Is Locked
If you have entered the wrong PIN three times, your Smartcard will automatically lock.
In this situation, you cannot reset the PIN yourself.
What to do:
- First try the Care Identity Portal
https://manage-care-identities.care-identity-service2.nhs.uk/#/self-service/unlock-authenticator
If that is unsuccesful you must contact your local Registration Authority - Contact your organisation’s Registration Authority (RA) or Local Smartcard Administrator (LSA)
- The RA/LSA will:
- Verify your identity (photo ID is usually required)
- Unlock your Smartcard and issue a new PIN
- You may need to attend in person, depending on local policy
Important Information
- Smartcards lock after 3 incorrect PIN attempts
- Replacement PINs must be changed at first login
- If your Smartcard is damaged, expired, or faulty, a replacement card may be required
- Keep your PIN secure and do not share it with anyone
